 Join Ian and Michelle Hutton in an introduction to cyanotype, an alternative photographic process developed in 1842. Images are created by blocking the sunlight from developing a treated light-sensitised material and the result is beautiful blue and white art. The material could be paper or fabric.

We will be watching a demonstration by Judy Molloy from Genesis Creations. She has created colourful dyes and will demonstrate how these can be used.

Textile Taster:  Tea Towel Collage

Last year the vintage tea towel collection of our member, Annamaria was exhibited at The Logan Historical Museum and a collection of Queensland place inspired tea towels was shown at The State Library the year before. These humble kitchen items are becoming something more than an overlooked sign of women’s work.

At this meeting we will experiment with collage inspired by Margie Creek’s small works made with vintage tea towels.

There will be no tutor but leading the activity will be Ann, Kathryn  and Annamaria. 

We will cut and glue fabrics making a small textile collage. Stitch can be added but this is experimenting with colour, layout, and composition. It will be simply playing, sampling, exploring and experimenting.

Please bring

1. Tea towels , softer and worn with time or crisp and new. Ragged and with holes so you are happy to cut up. Maybe one with a image you like
2. Fabric scissors and smaller embroidery scissors
3. Cereal box cardboard or linen as backing to determine size
4. Other fabrics that go well as you see in the image some chicken scratch work on gingham, so perhaps check fabric, crochet lace edges
5. Glue stick or fabric glue
6. Threads both embroidery and sewing if you wish to add this to your piece
7. Some ephemera such as rickrack, braid, bias binding.

ACTIVITY:  Chris will lead a leaf printing activity. 

Start to prepare now by collecting and pressing leaves. Find a heavy book and put some leaves between the pages. Place the leaves between tissue or baking paper or normal paper to stop them sticking to the book pages. If you can, choose leaves with prominent, interesting veins and varying shapes.  
BRING: watercolour paints, watercolour paint brushes, hand towel, jar for water, brayer (if you have one), paper to print on such as watercolour paper (at least 150 gsm). The better quality your paper is , the better your prints should be.
If you have an embossing / dye cut machine such as a Cuttlebug, Sissex Big Shot ( any brand) please bring it. These make good printing presses if you add thick card, felt etc to the plastic plates. Bring some card and felt if you want to do that.

Textile Taster:  Beading

Catherine Boyle will show how to make a basic peyote stitch square medallion with a simple flower image (3 designs available). Peyote stitch is a really versatile stitch that can be worked in lots of ways from flat to sculptural freeform pieces.
Bring $2 donation towards the cost of beads and a sharp pair of utility scissors.
